Spinecare Data Science Committee

Spinecare Data Science Committee

The volume and complexity of data in spinecare are growing exponentially. The unprecedented growth of data is primarily arising from expanding electronic medical records along with advances in diagnostic methods, such as genetics, laboratory studies, and advanced imaging. The increasing burden of overwhelming data adds to the complexity of decisions in the diagnostic process and at the point-of-care. The challenge has led to a search for new decision-support solutions, such as artificial intelligence (AI), which can be implemented at different stages along the spectrum of spinecare, beginning with diagnostic imaging.

The American Academy of Spine Physicians (AASP) plans to lead the effort in the exploration of potential applications of AI in spinecare. To help achieve this goal, the AASP developed the Spinecare Data Science Committee to serve as a forum for collaboration of spinecare professionals, AI developers, data scientists, and other industry leaders to investigate AI solutions.
The goals of the committee include:

-Identification of areas of spinecare which could benefit from the use of AI solutions and computational methods.

-Exploration of the potential role and impact of auto detection and characterization of pathology (radiomics) in spine imaging

-Discuss the required elements of meaningful use cases for the development of AI algorithms

-Contribute to the development of new spine disease taxonomies and classifications (subtyping) which could be used to annotate spine images and refine the differential diagnostic process.

-Create opportunities for acknowledging the effectiveness of AI in clinical settings.

-Organize and participate in multidisciplinary focus group sessions to explore the potential use and impact of AI in spine imaging and spinecare.

-Help identify common data elements (CDE) within the pipeline of spinecare, which could be used as input and output variables for algorithm development and implementation.

-Help develop implementation strategies for the application of AI solutions in spinecare.

-Heighten the state of awareness and readiness for AI use at all levels of spinecare

-Investigate the potential applications of computational 3D imaging and interactive virtual reality for tissue interrogation and surgical planning.

The AASP Data Science Committee is committed to empowering the advancement, validation and implementation of algorithms and artificial intelligence solutions in spinecare for the benefit of patients, spinecare professionals and society.

The AASP Data Science Committee is comprised of experienced professionals from different disciplines within the spinecare field including physicians, data scientists, surgeons, radiologists, and other nonsurgical spinecare professionals.
Inform a Colleague

Expand and Educate Your Spinecare Network

Welcome to the Inform a Colleague area of the Academy Website. The American Academy of Spine Physicians (AASP) strives to implement new and more efficient methods for members to communicate with other healthcare professionals. One of the most effective tools is the online "Inform a Colleague" function. This function can be used to expand and educate your spinecare referral network. It also represents a resource to conveniently inform others about trends in spinecare and about offers of organizations such as the American Academy of Spine Physicians (AASP), the International Spine Association (ISA). The link library also contains an application for membership with the AASP.

The online "Inform a Colleague" feature provides an invaluable time-saving service for keeping spinecare professionalsup-to-date, expanding the spinecare network, stimulating interdisciplinary referrals and for inviting colleagues to join the AASP. The library of links is always being updated with useful information and resources. The linked messages can be used to
