The volume and complexity of data in spinecare is growing exponentially, a trend driven by advances in diagnostic imaging. The origin of big data in spinecare also includes electronic medical records and other diagnostic methods, such as genetics and laboratory studies. The increasing burden of overwhelming data adds to the complexity of decision making. The challenge has led to a search for new decision-support solutions, such as artificial intelligence (AI), which can be implemented at different stages along the spectrum of spinecare, beginning with diagnostic imaging. Numerous companies have accepted the challenge to develop AI-based decision support solutions.

IBM represents an industry leader in the field of computational decision support. A division, titled "IBM Watson Health", was developed to advance health and to advance human services through the use of technology. Watson Health is supported by the innovation of IBM, the dynamic intelligence of Watson, and the collective expertise of computer and healthcare experts. The Watson Health team has developed a variety of different solutions for the radiologist. This includes a product referred to as Patient Synopsis "…a radiologist-trained AI tool that helps to efficiently inform clinical care decisions by extracting patient information from the EHR and projecting it via a single-view summary in sync with PACS".

During November of this year IBM invited thought leaders from the fields of neurology, neurosurgery and spinecare to participate with members of the IBM Watson Health team in a focus group session dedicated to discussing the potential role and impact of AI solutions in spinecare, more specifically, in spine imaging. Thought leaders invited to participate included two distinguished Council members of the American Academy of Spine Physicians (AASP) George J Dohrmann, MD, PhD, neurosurgeon; and David H. Durrant, DC, PhD(c), chiropractic neurologist. Dr. Durrant is currently in the final stages of his PhD dissertation, which is titled "Artificial Intelligence: Potential Impact on Spine Imaging Interpretation and Diagnosis". The meeting took place in the IBM offices in Chicago, Illinois.

The primary goal of the IBM group discussion was to identify areas of spinecare, which could benefit from applications of AI in radiology.  This included discussing the potential role of auto detection and characterization of non-visible features of pathology (radiomics) in spine imaging. The group acknowledged the importance of having more multidisplinary focus group sessions to explore the potential use and impact of AI in spine imaging. The group also acknowledged the important role of organizations, such as the AASP, to work with industry leaders in the development of AI solutions and to help heighten the state of awareness and readiness for AI use in clinical settings.

The AASP plans to lead the effort in the exploration of potential applications of AI in spinecare. To help achieve this goal, the AASP developed the Spinecare Data Science Committee to serve as a forum for collaboration of spinecare professionals, AI developers, data scientists, and other industry leaders to investigate AI solutions. Dr. Dohrmann and Dr. Durrant are both members of the AASP Data Science Committee.
Inform a Colleague

Expand and Educate Your Spinecare Network

Welcome to the Inform a Colleague area of the Academy Website. The American Academy of Spine Physicians (AASP) strives to implement new and more efficient methods for members to communicate with other healthcare professionals. One of the most effective tools is the online "Inform a Colleague" function. This function can be used to expand and educate your spinecare referral network. It also represents a resource to conveniently inform others about trends in spinecare and about offers of organizations such as the American Academy of Spine Physicians (AASP), the International Spine Association (ISA). The link library also contains an application for membership with the AASP.

The online "Inform a Colleague" feature provides an invaluable time-saving service for keeping spinecare professionalsup-to-date, expanding the spinecare network, stimulating interdisciplinary referrals and for inviting colleagues to join the AASP. The library of links is always being updated with useful information and resources. The linked messages can be used to
